Sailing Madeira — Aboard the Santa Maria | NOMADslow.tv
There are places that you visit, and then there are places that reshape the way you move, see, and listen. Madeira is the latter.
This series is not a guide, nor a portrait in the traditional sense. It is an immersion into an island suspended between elements, where mountains rise abruptly from the ocean, where forests drift in and out of time, and where light itself seems to move with intention.
Across five films, filmmaker Jason Rodi follows the natural rhythm of Madeira: from the volcanic pools of the north coast to the dense, primordial silence of the Fanal forest; from black sand beaches carved by the Atlantic to the warm stillness of the southern villages at sunset. Each moment reveals a different frequency of the island, sometimes powerful, sometimes intimate, always alive.
The music throughout the series is created by ANTENNAE, a live, improvised ensemble working in what can best be described as Fourth World music, a sound beyond geography and era, where ancient and modern sensibilities meet. Neither composed nor performed in the traditional sense, this music emerges through listening, presence, and collective awareness. It does not illustrate the image; it inhabits it.
Filmed in a slow, contemplative language, these works also invite you not to watch, but to inhabit. To feel the wind before the rain, the mist before it lifts, the space between movement and stillness.
This is Madeira as we experienced it, not as a destination, but as a state.
